December 25, 2025 – Public Hearings on Bishkek General Plan–2050 Concluded

Today, December 25, 2025, public hearings on the General Plan of Bishkek until 2050 were concluded.

Alexander Baranov, Head of the “Transport Infrastructure” division at LLC “NIIPG,” presented the current state of the city’s transport infrastructure.

Key points highlighted:

  • Road network condition: 40% of the main street-road network does not meet regulatory standards.
  • Traffic load: 85% of main streets are congested, and 77% are occupied by parked vehicles, which reduces traffic capacity by half.
  • Automobile growth: Rapid increase in vehicle ownership, with 330 cars per 1,000 residents (2024 data).
  • Public transport issues: Overcrowded vehicles, low travel speeds, and areas lacking service.

Planned transport infrastructure under the project:

  • Upgrade 333 km of main streets to meet standards.
  • Construct 299 km of main roads, including 89 km of bypass roads around Bishkek (49 km new construction).
  • Build 18 transport interchanges and 2 overpasses over railway lines.
  • Construct a tram line and implement a high-speed bus system.

Alexander Baranov noted that building a metro is not feasible, as it would cost roughly ten times more than creating a tram network.

Goals for public transport:

  • Increase public transport ridership by 54%.
  • Ensure 100% of the population has access to public transport.
  • Achieve 60% coverage of the population with regular public transport services.

Transport efficiency example:

  • One modern tram, two high-capacity buses, or three regular buses can replace 180 private cars while carrying 220 passengers comfortably.
